Steeped in history, Vestal Park was established in 1834. Early burials include town settlers and veterans of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Information about those buried here can be obtained through the Vestal Town Historian.

Revolutionary War

John Rush (1758 - 1838) A blacksmith and later a cooper, Rush who was from New Brunswick NJ, enlisted in June of 1776 and traveled through Vestal during the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition. After the war he returned to live in Willow Point.

Wiliam Weston (1761 - 1848) Weston, who emigrated from England about 1775, joined the American army and served as a fifer, later joining the ranks with gun and bayonet. For a portion of the war he was George Washington’s bodyguard.

Civil War

Moses LaGrange (1840 - 1933) One of three brothers who fought in the Civil War, joined December 1862, mustered out in June of 1865. He served as town clerk, justice of the peace and school board member. At his death he was believed to be one of the oldest local Civil War Veterans.

Thomas Harris (1827 - 1919) Known as an exceptional craftsman, he enlisted as an artificer in 1862. His craftsmanship extended to two Civil War models which were selected for an exhibit that stood for many years in the Smithsonian. Thomas served as Vestal postmaster.

Eugene B. Mersereau (1840 - 1906) Enlisted in Michigan Infantry in 1864 and mustered out in July 1865. He married Elizabeth LaGrange in 1868. He served as Vestal Town Clerk, postmaster and Justice in Court of Special Sessions.

Town Settlers

Elias W. Crane (1819 - 1898) Elias owned and operated a large saw mill on Main Street. His family operated a feed mill and ferry between Vestal and Union.

Ransom Baty (1806 - 1892) A well-known Vestal carpenter, Ransom built the 1844 Drovers Inn for John and Jacob Rounds.
